After a few weeks of work in Alviela river banks, everything is ready to remove the Sourinho weir. Rios Livres Programme, from GEOTA are pleased to invite everyone to the removal of the obsolete barrier, which will take place on 29 November 2025, at 11:00, with gathering next to the Azenha de Filhós/Bugalhos.
The river rehabilitation actions currently underway on the Alviela, in the Sourinho section, include the removal of obsolete barriers with negative ecological impact, the stabilisation and requalification of the riverbanks, the control of invasive species, the promotion of native species, and the monitoring of fish communities and sediment dynamics. These interventions constitute one of the main results of the projects developed by the RIOS LIVRES GEOTA team between 2023 and 2025, namely Rollin’ Rivers: People, Knowledge and Action to Enhance River Restoration in Portugal, funded by the Initiative for Mediterranean Freshwater Ecosystems (DIMFE); Let Alviela Run – Sourinho’s Dam Removal in Portugal, funded by the Open Rivers Programme; and the Dam Removal Europe Award 2023, granted to GEOTA for the work carried out on the Alviela.
